What is the purpose of tithing and giving offerings to the church? Is it to keep the lights on, pay the pastor, or support missions? Actually, those are secondary purposes for giving. The first purpose is to honor God as the creator and provider of all things. As we acknowledge God for who He is and who we are in our covenant relationship, it will be our strong desire and act of obedience to return a portion of what we have received for use in kingdom ministries. It is a form of worship. That is why “passing the plate” is a part of our Sunday morning services — just as singing, praying and preaching are.
